Mostly Musicals – Songs about the Weather

Kelly Lester sings with Mostly Musicals 3 19 14

Singin’ in the Rain and Soon it’s Gonna Rain

Two of the wonderful songs I got a chance to perform at Don’t Tell Mama this past Wednesday for Mostly Musicals!

One of my favorite shows of all times is The Fantasticks. Back in 1992, I starred as Luisa in a glorious production at the now closed Richard Basehart Playhouse. This little gem in Woodland Hills, CA was home to many incredible artists and run by my dear friend Cynthia Baer. She directed this beautiful production of The Fantasticks and it ran for almost six months. I starred opposite Nick Cavarra as Matt, and alongside Brian Stokes Mitchell who played El Gallo. The late, great Cliff Norton and Marshall Borden played the fathers. About 5 months into the run, I did leave the production, as I was pregnant with our first daughter, Jenny Luisa. Yes, her middle name is a nod to this favorite role of mine 🙂

I haven’t sung the stunning duet, “Soon it’s Gonna Rain”, since that production. Getting a chance to sing it again, here with David Meinke, brought back lovely memories!

I first performed this arrangement of “Singin’ in the Rain” last month at the Gene Kelly Tribute produced by Happy Hour Live on Stage. But since it fit in perfectly with this evening’s weather theme, I got another chance to sing it again. And this one even got taped! Thank you to Amy Francis Schott for all the fancy camera work and, of course, the invitation to sing!
